If the powers out, how am I writing this? Borrowing some power and some heat from family.

We have enough snow to swamp Ruby,

get the Ford stuck

and make it impossible to leave the house (until today).

Gardening Ford Tough

Now I'm not one to use tools the proper way that they were intended. These Yew bushes were planted too close to the house and were causing the siding to collect mildew.

So I removed them.

Using the Car.

It was lots of fun.

So in there place I planted; peppers, lavender, basil, oregano and catnip.

Yummy.

And yes that is the Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter hanging in the corner, it seems to be working fine.

Fan tastic

OK i think i have an over fascination or love of ceiling fans. Being able to flip a switch and have cool air flowing is one of my favorite things. I really do love them. We had 3 in the other house and there were a few here when we moved in. There was however none in the living room.

So figuring that I was going to gut the first floor (at some point in the future) i thought well i'll poke a hole in the ceiling, put in a fan bracket and hang a ceiling fan to help with the summer heat. So i measured out the center of the room (there was no fixture hanging in the living room) and started to make the hole to insert the fan bracket. And what did i find? A circuit box, complete with energized wires. (not the best thing to have in an enclosed ceiling)



So my little brain thought, now what? My answer? Put it off. I have decided to wait to deal with that mess until we gut the first floor. I measured over to find a new hole for the ceiling fan, installed the bracket and hung the fan. It is powered through an extension cord that is plugged into a wall outlet (for now anyway). We now have cool air in the living room. Have i mentioned that i love this thing? 60 inch blades, two light sources, three speeds (which reverse for winter time use) and an increased blade angle to push more air. It really is the small things in life that make me the happiest.

the things i will do for my husband

Ok as most of you know his birthday is coming up. He is notoriously hard to shop for. So I keep a list of things in my head for such occasions when I can't think of anything else to get him (no not those things) things like this:

It's a Trifle.

And yes that is ground beef in there.

Have you ever seen the episode of friends where Rachel makes desert for Thanksgiving, and she mixes a trifle recipe with a Shepard's pie recipe? Well ever since the first time my husband watched that episode he has wanted a trifle just like that one. So Happy Birthday My Husband.

And for you that have not seen that episode. I found it on youtube, well the important part. Enjoy.

So for those if you who missed the ingredients it went a little like this. (I made some changes, so I'll write down what I did)

A layer of lady fingers (ok its pound cake), raspberry jam, vanilla pudding (I don't do custard from scratch), raspberries, more pound cake, beef sauteed with peas and carrots, more pound cake, raspberry jam (two layers of jam for my husband), more pudding, bananas and whipped cream (whipped fresh).

Hard at Work

So I've been working for a few weeks now. Its challenging, exhausting, sometimes tedious and sometimes (yes sometimes) fun, plus I don't have go to the gym. It also leaves me little time for much else. It also means that on high vacation/party weekends no-one gets to take the day off. So I will be MIA for the festivities.

I will be thinking about you all, while I bust my butt loading gravel into the back of old ladies cars. Have lots of fun, take lots of pictures and remember the sunscreen.

Vermont becomes 4th state to allow gay marriage

BOSTON (Reuters) - Vermont legalized gay marriage on Tuesday after lawmakers overrode a veto from the governor by a wafer-thin margin, making the New England state the fourth in the United States where gays can wed.
The vote, nine years after Vermont was first in the United States to adopt a same-sex civil-union law, also makes the tiny state of 624,000 people the first in the nation to introduce gay marriage through legislative action instead of the courts.
"We've shown that truth and fairness and justice and love are more powerful than one man's veto pen," same-sex marriage advocate Beth Robinson said to cheers from supporters in the state capital of Montpelier after Vermont's House of Representatives passed the bill by a 100-49 vote.
Known for picturesque foliage, quaint dairy farms and a counter-culture spirit, Vermont joins New England neighbors Connecticut and Massachusetts in allowing gay marriage. Iowa legalized gay marriage last week.
Lawmakers in next-door New Hampshire and Maine are also considering bills to allow gay marriage, putting New England at the heart of a divisive national debate over the issue.
Washington D.C. extended new rights to gay couples on Tuesday, too, with a unanimous City Council vote to recognize same-sex marriages performed outside the district. Some city lawmakers lauded the move as a prelude to legal same-sex marriage in the U.S. capital.
OVERRIDES GOVERNOR'S VETO
Vermont's bill, which becomes law on September 1, looked in peril after a 95-52 vote on Thursday in the Democratic-controlled House that was five votes short of the support needed to clear a veto from Republican Governor Jim Douglas.
Douglas vetoed the bill on Monday, urging lawmakers to focus on the economy instead. Supporters needed two-thirds of the votes in each chamber to override his veto. They got that easily in the state Senate, which passed the bill 23-5 earlier on Tuesday.
The vote came just four days after Iowa's Supreme Court struck down a decade-old law that barred gays from marrying. The surprise ruling, which made Iowa the first in the heartland to allow same-sex marriages, may have influenced some Vermont lawmakers to change their vote, gay marriage advocates said.
California briefly recognized gay marriage until voters banned it in a referendum last year.
The group Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, which helped to legalize gay marriage in Massachusetts and Connecticut, has set a goal of expanding such marriages to all New England states by 2012. Maine and New Hampshire already offer same-sex couples some form of legal recognition.
Forty-three U.S. states have laws explicitly prohibiting gay marriage, including 29 with constitutional amendments restricting marriage to one man and one woman.

Yard Work

So I had been out cleaning up from this winter, enjoying the 50 degree weather (when it came). Trimming way overgrown bushes down to a more reasonable size. To give you a size reference the bottom of the window is just over 5 feet tall. Just high enough for me to keep banging the top of my head into. The before pictures were taken early spring and mid summer of this past year. The after pictures were this week. The bushes are not done, I wanted to give them a chance to recover before I cut back the front to where it should be. (Or it might kill them)

This is Ruby running crazy through my mom's back yard after a huge snowstorm last year. She is going on 5 years old and still runs just as crazy. Just look at the slightly crossed eyes and the helter skelter dog tags.
